WHY FIBER?
Importance of Fiber
Fiber provides a wide range of benefits from gut health and microbiome nourishment to weight management and blood sugar control. There are a number of ways to get adequate amounts of fiber into your diet - fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds - yet the majority of us still face deficiencies. In a recent survey conducted by NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), it was reported that nearly 95% of Americans are deficient in their daily intake of dietary fiber.¹ According to the Institute of Medicine, you should be getting 19-38g of fiber in your diet daily (depending on gender and age).² Most Americans are getting only half of the recommended intake.³ Adding fiber supplements to our diet daily in addition to eating fiber-rich foods is key to supporting digestive wellness and overall health.
Fiber Deficiency
According to a recent survey conducted by NHANES, nearly 95% of Americans are deficient in their daily intake of dietary fiber. According to the Institute of Medicine, you should be getting 19-38g of fiber in your diet daily (depending on gender and age).² Most Americans are getting only half of the recommended intake.¹
Soluble vs. Insoluble Fiber
There are many sources of fiber, but the two forms in which we consume fiber are either soluble or insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves completely in liquid and can provide a number of benefits ranging from microbiome balance to blood sugar control (depending on the fiber source). Unlike soluble fiber, insoluble fiber does not dissolve in liquids, but is important to helping sweep out the digestive tract, promoting regularity and helping alleviate constipation.³
Prebiotic Fiber
It’s important to know that while all prebiotics are fiber, not all fiber is considered a prebiotic. Prebiotic fiber is especially important to gut health because, in order to be classified as a prebiotic, it must pass certain scientific tests. First, it has to scientifically demonstrate that it can resist acidity in the gut and reach the upper GI tract, where it is absorbed. Second, it needs to be able to ferment within the gut microflora. And lastly, it should show stimulation of good gut bacteria production within the GI tract.⁴ Prebiotics are important within the gut ecosystem because they provide nourishment and support for probiotics to thrive, which in turn helps balance and diversify our gut’s microbiota. This balance is important for a variety of reasons - general digestive wellness, immune function, and even mental well-being.⁵
