PHGG (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum)
Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum (PHGG) is a soluble, prebiotic dietary fiber that plays a few key roles in supporting different metabolic processes:
Prebiotic
PHGG promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria by serving as a substrate or food source for these microbes. When PHGG reaches the colon undigested, it undergoes fermentation by beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. During fermentation, these bacteria break down PHGG into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and other metabolites.
SCFA Production
PHGG undergoes fermentation by gut bacteria in the colon, leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs, like butyrate, provide energy for colonocytes and create an acidic environment that favors the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting the growth of harmful pathogens.
Anti-inflammatory Properties
SCFAs produced from the fermentation of PHGG have anti-inflammatory properties that help neutralize harmful free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).Bio.me uses a PHGG fiber that is tasteless, colorless, and odorless, so it can easily be added to beverages and food. Because of the enzymatic pre-digestion, PHGG dissolves easily without the gumminess of many other fibers, and it causes far less gas and bloating than non-hydrolyzed guar gum.
